Mother's Day Business Survey Results 2016
Thank you for taking part in our survey. Here, as promised, are the results.
They are significantly better than those for Valentine's Day. Then, allowing for the fact that it fell
on a Sunday, many florists were disappointed and had not done as well as they had expected.
With Mother's
Day, in contrast, there is a much more positive picture, with 8 out of 10 florists saying that business was better than expected
(4 out of 10 saying much better than expected) perhaps because of what they feared after their Valentine's Day sales.
In order to be able to make a direct comparison with Valentine's Day business
we asked the same questions for both days in this survey so that it is the same people commenting on both days. We have
given the results for both Mother's and Valentine's days side by side to make the comparison easier to see.
Again, as for Valentine's Day, generally the results for those florists not
in a relay group were better than those who were with a relay organisation, although the difference was not as marked.
Following Valentine's Day 6 out of 10 florists were still optimistic about the rest
of 2016. After Mother's Day that level of optimism has increased to 8 out of 10.
I hope that optimism proves well founded. It's up to all of us to make it happen. We need to get
our promotion thinking caps on and our marketing in gear!

The detailed results (based on 239 responses) are
below.
As you can see from the chart above, the level of business achieved by 8 out of 10 florists
was better than they expected (with 4 out of 10 much better than expected). This is significantly better than the
result for Valentine's Day as you can see from the next chart.
In general, although the majority of florists did well, a higher proportion of florists who are NOT members of relay
organisations reported better results than did those florists who are members of one. This follows similar results for
Valentine's Day.
The contrast between Valentine's Day and Mother's Day is marked. For Valentine's
Day there was a broad spread of results, with more florists considering that their sales were below their expectations.
Following Mother's Day 8 out of 10 florists judged that their results had exceeded their expectations.

8 out of 10 florists reported that their sales were better than last year, with only
a small minority saying that they were not as good as the previous year. Again, the contrast with Valentine's Day
is marked, as you can see in the next chart below.
Whereas there was a broad spread of results from Valentine's Day, for Mother's Day
the results were much better, with the great majority reporting gains over last year.
Despite a relatively disappointing Valentine's Day, the majority of florists (6 out
of 10) were still optimistic about the rest of 2016. Following a good Mother's Day that level of optimism has increased
to 8 out of 10.
